Introduction
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the values, beliefs, and
experiences that shape the different generations in the workforce. The five living workforce
generations, including Generation Z/Boomlets, Generation Y/Millennium, Generation X, Baby
Boomers, and Mature/Silent, have all experienced unique events, cultural influences, and
technological advancements that have helped shape their values, beliefs, and perspectives.
Understanding the experiences and cultural influences of each generation is crucial for leaders,
as it allows them to better understand and communicate with their workforce (Gunteret al.,
2022). By embracing the diversity of the workforce and valuing the experiences of each
generation, leaders can create a more cohesive and productive work environment that leverages
the strengths of each generation. In this paper, we will explore the experiences of three of these
generations, Generation Y/Millennium, Generation X, and Baby Boomers, and how these
experiences have influenced their values. We will also examine how music from each era can
provide insight into the dominant concerns, values, and views of life during that period.
Generation Y/Millennium:
Generation Y/Millennium, also known as the Millennial Generation, was born between
1981 and 1996 and is often characterized by its use of technology, emphasis on work-life
balance, and a desire for instant gratification. The events and cultural influences that shaped this
generation include the rise of technology and the Internet, the aftermath of 9/11, and the 2008
financial crisis. Music from this era highlights the dominant concerns, values, and views of life
during this time period. Pop, hip-hop, and R&B music from the late 1990s and early 2000s often
focused on themes of love, self-expression, and individualism (Mahapatra et al., 2022). This can
be seen in songs like Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time” and Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor,”

which emphasize empowerment and individuality. In terms of values, Generation Y/Millennium
places a strong emphasis on work-life balance, with many Millennials valuing the opportunity to
pursue their passions outside of work. This is reflected in the rise of the gig economy, which
allows individuals to work flexible hours and pursue their interests. Additionally, this generation
is highly collaborative, with many Millennials valuing teamwork and collaboration in the
workplace. The following are values for the Generation Y/Millennium;

Technology: Millennials grew up with technology and are often seen as early adopters of
new gadgets and software.

Diversity: This generation is known for valuing diversity and inclusion and tends to be
more open-minded about differences …
